Kulfi’s Guide to Bombay
Book Design, Illustration
What to eat, drink, buy and see in Mumbai, by Kulfi Collective
The goal was to design and illustrate a zine that shares Kulfi’s Mumbai recommendations with their clients and visitors.
Kulfi Collective is a creative studio that builds content and experiences for brands. With an office in Worli, Mumbai is the city that inspires their life and work. Presenting: Kulfi’s Guide to Bombay, an A5-sized zine made to carry around.
The cover is a view of the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link that every Mumbaikar knows. The covers are gate-fold to add some thickness, and the front cover also includes a map of Mumbai with the team’s favourite neighbourhoods.
The book has four sections: Gobble, Guzzle, Grab and Gawk, each with its own colour. The bright colours draw from the energy, playfulness and constant movement of the city. The layout is clean and fuss-free, and the overprinting, cross-hatching and rough charcoal sketch-style illustrations give the book a personal quality, just like the recommendations in it. We also used a monospace font for pull quotes to represent Mumbai’s typewriter community, and a handwritten font for notes.
We wanted the book to have a scrapbook-like quality so the reader can make it their own. The end of the book has stickers of Kulfi’s own icons, ready to be removed and used. The zine now sits proudly in their office, a keepsake for visitors.

Elements like the Woodside Inn glass and yellow plates at Swati Snacks bring the reader closer to the details that make the city.
