Art Basel X Khushnu Panthaki Hoof

Commissioned by Nowness for Art Basel, this film is part of a series called Inner Worlds, which goes inside the studios of celebrated artists, curators and collectors in partnership with Art Basel.

What makes a space come alive? How can darkness be used as a tool to create and modulate light in spaces? This film delves into the architectural philosophy and process of Khushnu Panthaki Hoof through such questions. Khushnu is the founder of Studio Sangath, an architectural practice in Ahmedabad. The granddaughter of Pritzker Prize-winner B.V. Doshi, she carries forward his legacy of sustainable, thoughtful architecture.

Conceptualising and bringing alive Khushnu’s practice began with a dive into the work that has shaped her career. The beautiful Sangath, where bare cement structures stand against lush trees, became the venue for our film shoot. The perfect background to explore Khushnu’s practice, which uses imperfect form to invite the viewer to interpret and define it themselves.

Ahmedabad, the city that is witness to Khushnu’s daily work and life, is also a source of constant inspiration. The film contrasts its vibrant spirit and heritage architecture with the calmness of Sangath and Khushnu’s work. We also explore her relationship with B.V. Doshi through archived photographs, showcasing the beginning of her journey into architecture.
